Are your children in need of a carpentry/handyman elective?  Do they enjoy swinging a hammer and bringing a new item home?  Do you like FREE?  Then check out the children's projects at Home Depot and Lowe's each month. On the first Saturday of each month Home Depot offers a FREE workshop for kids to complete from 9AM to 12PM.  There is no need to register ahead of time.  When we lived in Maryland this was something my dad took our two oldest to and they all really enjoyed that time together.  My kids still have their aprons with the pins for each project attached to them.  Some of the projects have been kept or re-purposed over time.  So, the kids and I headed over to Home Depot Saturday morning for the Kid's Workshop and were surprised to find it set up outside with booths, a bounce house, free hot dogs, an ambulance and police car.  October is Fire Safety Month and it is their big annual event.  Instead of doing the project i...

If you have more than one child I highly recommend doing kid dates.  The idea is to have one-on-one time with a child.  It doesn't have to be something extravagant.  It can even be free. We currently have four children ages 11, 8, 4 and 4.  We mainly plan kid dates with our oldest two and try to take turns taking them out.  Since the twins are now 4 we will probably start taking them on little one-on-one dates soon.  We have tried to grab one child to go with us on errands sometimes and the twins have done that before.  It is amazing how much you can learn from your child when you are alone together.  They aren't fighting for your attention so it is normally a very enjoyable experience.  Whenever one of our children, particularly our second child, is fussing, whining, arguing or struggling with their behavior, taking time to get out of the house alone with that child changes their whole attitude and actions.  Now, I do believe rest and...

Do you like to go to conventions?  Do you have to go for work or do you choose to go?  Whatever your feeling is about conventions I would like to encourage you to go to one, at least once every few years.  Preferably, I hope you can choose one that is on something that interests you and/or applies to your life.  I hope to go to a travel conference, ComicCon and a forensic science conference someday, but for now I am at a homeschool convention.  Since I home educate our children, this convention is immediately applicable to my life, it's close by and very affordable.     I encourage you to look at conventions as TripLearning experiences for you and for your children.  So, I thought I would share some of the things I have learned from going to homeschool conventions like this one and I think some of these things apply to other types of conventions as well.  1.  Don’t rush into buying something.  ...
