FREE Museums

Once again Houston has an amazing selection of free places to visit in the city.  There are a number of completely free museums, as well as museums with free times each week.  Here is a great list of options for adults and families:

· Children’s Museum of Houston - FREE Thursday  5 - 8pm  (Excellent museum for children)
· Czech Center Museum Houston - FREE Monday 10am - 4pm
· The Health Museum - FREE Thursday 2 - 5pm  (Excellent museum for families)
· The John C. Freeman Weather Museum - FREE Thursday 12 - 4pm
· Houston Museum of Natural Science - FREE      Thursday 3 - 6pm (summer), Thursday 2 - 5pm (winter)  (Excellent choice for families)
· Museum of Fine Arts Houston - FREE Thursday   10am - 9pm  (Wonderful art collection & interesting for children)

Depending on your family and the age of your children you may want to visit some of these museums without children first.  Personally, I felt
some of the exhibits at the Contemporary Arts Museum were not appropriate for all children and could be scary for younger children.  I am
interested in visiting the Holocaust Museum, but I know that the one in Washington, D.C. is not appropriate for young children due to the
subject matter and pictures.  Be sure you check out the links and check on times before visiting.  Currently the Rice University Art Gallery is
closed.

The REAL Huck Finn's House (Tom Blankenship) Hannibal , Missouri A small town north of St. Louis , MO is the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain.  The Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum offers several buildings to tour with displays, interactive exhibits, the Norman Rockwell gallery and treasured Clemens family artifacts. Mark Twain's Boyhood Home The kids got to meet "Mark Twain" "Painting the fence" revealed artifacts in the museum Mark Twain based Tom Sawyer on his own childhood in Hannibal and some of his characters off of people in town.  Huckleberry Finn was based on his friend, Tom Blankenship.  Becky Thatcher was his childhood friend, Laura Hawkins.  Sam Clemens lived in Hannibal from age 4 to 17.  If you love the stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, a visit to Hannibal will make you feel like you have stepped into the books. Mercer Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

It was a beautiful sunny day, so the kids and I decided to visit the botanical gardens at the Mercer Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.  The flowers were in full bloom and it was a wonderful day to take pictures.  The kids love being outdoors and walking the trails.  Besides all the plants, we saw fish, a turtle, a frog, male cardinals (Abby's favorite bird), butterflies, a bee, and assorted bugs.  The arboretum is on the other side of the main road and there is also a playground on that side, but we didn't go over there today.  And... it is all free!  The arboretum trails are not as varied as the trails at the Houston Arboretum, but it is flat and easy for walking.  I also found out they have a FREE story time for kids and parents each month.  Here's the description from their website, http://mercerarboretum.org . Sheldon Lake State Park

Here are some photos from a recent visit to Sheldon Lake State Park .  It is a former fish hatchery.  There are some short trails, an 82-foot observation tower with an elevator, and ponds for family fishing.  It is also FREE admission for all ages!  It's on the East side of Houston off Beltway 8.  It's a small state park that gives you a nice break from the hustle and bustle of city living.  Take a picnic lunch and go exploring. Two of the former fish hatchery ponds. A 1/2 mile trail goes past the ponds. They have restrooms and some educational areas. There's a small botanical garden.
